4x4 rebody (TTT-Technik, Tipps und Tricks)

Kan Doit, (vor 853 Tagen)

hello, new to here , have owned 3 mk1 type kangoo mpv ,all were driven until the engines failed to pass the annual test , great little cars , fairly easy to fix ,and now all my old ones are slowly being used to transfer their parts over into my latest mk1 ,2001 1.4 petrol , sadly all are not 4x4 . These are very rare here in ireland and to import one now is just not do able for me , but i wonder if its mechanically possible to transfer most of the 4x4 parts onto a 2 wheel drive shell , as i do have a good body shell ,some car rebuilding experience , and i do have the rear subframe from a kangoo 4x4. Yes i know it can not be done unless you are really bloody stubborn and yes i know its not a good economicly sound plan either , but that has not put me off a few other daft projects in the past , i await answers , and rejections . plus ideas ,thanks to all .

Ohne einen Kangoo 4x4 als Spender kannst du den Umbau vergessen . Mit dem 1,4er Schrott Motor geht das sowieso nicht .

Thats why i am on this forum , to ask if it could be done , if the body shells are the same , do they share the same floor pan layout , i can get hold of some 4x4 parts from a scrapped one , but only the very basic parts are useable ,and i have doubts about some of the parts being from the original 4x4 , like the front struts and the hub carriers , as the van was in a collision some time ago and stripped down .Some parts went missing and were later replaced , but with what and from where ? as no part stockist in ireland would have ever sold 4x4 replacement parts . But i have a plan . One of the most unique parts is the rear subframe and the rear suspension arms , which i do have and the rear anti roll bar. Sorry I did not say it would be built up on my 1.4 mpv , i have another body shell in good enough condition to base this build up on .I will/would have to source the engine and gearbox ,propshaft , plus rear differential from another type of 4x4. Once i have stripped out the last of the usefull parts from my old 1.2 mpv , i will then be able to check if the 4x4 rear subframe can be put into a mk1 mpv . So onto the next problem ,the fuel tank , as they seem to be unique to the 4x4 .

Hey,

unfortunatelly the 4x4 Body is totally different from the 2x4 standard versions. The complete drivetrain, axles, diff and stuff need special moutings. Brakes are different, you need special mufflers and stuff. This is, what makes the Kangoo 4x4 that damn expensive: looks like a standard Renault but needs a whole bunch of parts, only needed in that special model.

Kangoo 4x4 LHD will cost around 5000€ in fairly good condition on the continent. Traditionally the british LHD cars used to be like 30-40% cheaper, but the Kangoo 4x4 is very rare.

Thanks , yes i have looked into it about all the special parts needed , and the expense of it , but most of it can be gotten around by modification , well apart from the plastic fuel tank of course , but i am still trying to see if the actual body and floor pan are the same across all the mk1 kangoo . Yes the mk1 did undergo an update to the front panelwork but not underneath to the subframes and floorpans as far as i know .This will be a project build for me , the labour is out of my own time , i can weld and fabricate , and after building up my mk1 cortina from a wrecked rotten shell, stripped down to its bare naked body not a bolt left on it ,then modifying the whole car-- as there was no point to a total original restoration. I think i am able for a mk1 kangoo , but not going to go overboard and make a show car of it , i would like to build a camping option with it , which i can then re-register and avail of reduced road tax and insurance . This is to fit in with a later on plan of life , cheers for now.

Thanks ,this the exact information i am looking for , yes i realised the front subframe is differant as the mounting points on it are longer /higher to gain the 40mm , all do-able with some weld fabrication work , the 4x4 steering rack has a pinion stem length of 80mm , a standard rack has 40mm , so an extension piece needed or longer steering columns lower section needed, plus i am right hand drive so slightly harder to source a good 4x4 rh rack . We are also in a trade war with b wreckit , so ordering one off the e bay uk is costly even secondhand , we are also finding it a lot harder to import cars from them as well now .The cardan /propshaft bearing mounts ,well not too difficult to make up a metal framework and weld those in to suit , the exhaust i can make to suit my self from stainless steel pipe and some bends , the rear subframe mounting points into the bodywork , well some lathe turned steel bungs threaded for bolts and some metal sheetwork folded /fabrication to cover over neatly ---i think thats possible or do- able . So onto the next hurdle to jump over ,till later ,cheers
